Application Case Histories

#110

Sleeve integrity and enhanced emissions control improve efficiency and economy.

 Problem:

Plant engineers at a south Texas processor were seeking improved valving for their HCL cold anhydrous ammonia service. The competitor sleeved plug valves were not providing satisfactory service. The sleeves were turning in the valve body. Similar problems were reported in hydrofluoric processing applications. This created a dangerous situation for two reasons. First, the displaced sleeve kept the valve from closing properly. Second, since the sleeve created the primary seal to atmosphere, there was serious concern about the potential for stem leakage.

 Solution:

The competitor valves were replaced with Tufline XP Sleeved Plug Valves. The unique 360 degree port-defining lips kept the sleeve from turning. Fugitive emissions were held in check by the Tufline dual sealing system and extended live-loaded packing. Tufline's patented shrink-seal lip also enhanced control of fugitive emissions during the critical periods of thermal cycling.

 Follow Up

The Tufline XP Sleeved Plug Valves have been in service in this difficult application for a number of years with no problems reported. The valve replacement rate has been dramatically reduced, providing greater economy of operation.
